The Ways to Reach Ustica and Things to Do on This Remote Island
20 Dec 2023
If you have been planning a vacation in Europe, you will have numerous destinations on the list, including the capitals of the major countries. However, if you want to spend less and enjoy a lot, there are numerous lesser-known destinations on this continent. On the other hand, if you want to go to an island in the Mediterranean and understand how people lived here or still live, there are, again, many options and one of these is Ustica, one of the many in Sicily. It is to the Northwest of the Sicilian mainland and there are no direct flights. To get here you have to get to Palermo, the capital of Sicily and catch a ferry from there.
Cross the sky and sea to get here
There are a number of direct flights to Palermo from a number of major American cities, along with quite a few with stopovers. All major airlines including American, Delta and United offer flights to this destination, often in association with a few European airlines. If you are on a break in Europe, you can easily catch flights to this city as even their national airlines will offer direct flights to this city. Once you reach the international airport here you can ask the taxi driver to take you to the harbor from where you can catch the ferry to Ustica or pre-book it with the help of tourist operators.
Different from the average holidays
Once you reach the island, the first thing you will be looking for is accommodation. There are a few holiday homes here and to avoid any risks you should book them before you get here. You may even find some people on this island willing to offer you a room for a few days. As for food, as you would expect on an island there will be plenty of seafood and as you are in Italy, there will be plenty of items from Italian cuisine apart from those from other European cuisines. Ideally, you should try to reach here by the evening so you can rise fresh and early the next day, ready to explore the island.
A small island with a lot to offer
The population of this island is just over a thousand and there was no permanent settlement here before the last century. The reason for this was its location in the Tyrrhenian Sea, which allowed for constant raids from the pirates and there were not enough reasons or resources to protect the island from potential invaders. People are known to have lived here a few millenniums ago and there are quite a few archaeological digs to prove this. Due to the remote location of this island, it was found to be fit to be a prison for the dangerous and even in the world wars the ones considered unwanted were jailed here.
The usual and unusual things to do
Now that you are here, you will be thinking of the things to do. What we have mentioned above will give an idea of the things to come. What is recommended by most tourists who have come here is that you take a boat trip and see all parts of the island, though there are a few other activities too:
- Now that you are on a small island, you will be expecting some fun with water. Whether you are after snorkeling on the surface or scuba diving to the depths of the sea to see the volcanic remains, there are places from where you can rent the equipment.
- There is a small harbor here with boats of all sizes parked, so you can go fishing with them, if they allow you to.
- If you like architecture, there are quite a few buildings to take the best part of the day to see and your tourist guide will explain everything in as much detail as you need.
- If you like history, there are quite a few archeological sites to prove everything that the guides will tell you.
- If you want to see the interiors of the island, you can explore the flora and fauna possibly with the same tourist guide.
- There is another thing, that is unique to this island and these are nights by the beaches, on the edges on the island. You can get to see the widest view of the stars from here and you may even be able to recognize the various constellations from here, several of them together. The reason for this is the clear sky with nothing to pollute the clean environment.
Once you come here, you will recommend this island to everyone you know and boast.
