Survival tips in winter for flights and airports
06 Jan 2025
Everyone has preferences for the time of the year they would like to fly and not just where they would like to. For some, this is winter so they can enjoy the views of lands covered with ice and enjoy the hot meals served onboard. They won’t mind wearing bulky clothes in confined spaces, though others will be flying because they have to for business or studies. While the temperatures can get freezing in most states of the USA, some southern states will have cities with enjoyable temperatures which even attract some seasonal tourists. So, your preparations will vary according to the airports you are boarding your flights from and the airports where you will be landing.
Dress for the season
Yes, catching flights is not as simple as getting to the airport and finding your seat in the aircraft. You will need to get to the airport a few hours before the flight departure time, as you will be passing through the queues for check-in, security checks, and even the immigration counters if traveling overseas. All this will take some time and in the cold temperatures, most of you will be in heavy clothes which can limit your movements. There will be different weather conditions at the airports, between which you will be flying, so you should choose clothes that keep you warm but also allow you to move freely. So, you should give yourself some time to try out the different dresses.
Check the flight status
Winter comes with its storms which can threaten your flights, so it will be best to find out if everything is fine and that you will not be stranded at the airport, either with the flight cancelled or delayed. You will expect the airlines to update you about such matters when they get the information themselves and they will in most cases. However, the weather conditions can change while you are on your taxi to the airport. In case of delays, you should be prepared to wait for the flights whether at home, if you get the information at the right time, though you will have to reschedule your cab rides or the airport, where you may have to share the waiting area with a large crowd unless you have a business class or first class ticket which allow you entry into the VIP lounges of the airlines, if available at the airport. The airlines often offer you vouchers for meals and drinks, if your flights get delayed.
Traveling to and from the airport
The weather conditions will also have an impact on the traffic in the city you are in. So, unless you are flying late at night, you should check out with the cab drivers or your friend or family member taking you to that airport about what will be the right time to start to reach the airport on time. If you are planning to use public transport during working hours, you should make sure that you will be able to manage your baggage comfortably on the way and if the buses or metro rails are functioning normally. If you are offered the shuttles operated by the hotel you are in, they will usually know what time to start the journey in the different seasons.
Different types of travelers
Your mobility and what you will need will often be affected by your group size and the type of your group. If you are a solo traveler, you will have nobody to worry about but just you, though you will need to stay alert with nobody to wake you up. If you are traveling with your family, you will need to make sure that the young ones and the elders are as comfortable as possible. In this case, you should always find out what the airport authorities will be able to do for you and the facilities on offer for people of such age groups. If you are a business class traveler or a first class traveler, you will usually be told all the extras you will have for not just when you are onboard but also while you are at the airport.
Insurance when you need it
In extreme winters or under severe weather conditions, the flights can get canceled and this can be very distressing if you want to reach the destination at any cost. Most airlines will offer alternative flights or reimburse the amount you have spent, though in some cases this is known to take some time. Often they will offer you credit points which you can choose to book any flights with them. If you don’t wish to take any chances, it’s always best to have insurance coverage with you. It will be particularly useful if you are stuck at a stopover, as this will cover your accommodations and other costs.
Conclusion
Life can be at the mercy of weather gods and most of us will experience this at least once in our lifetime no matter what part of the world we are in. As for flights, the airlines and airports don’t wish to take any chances, as the aircraft and your lives are too valuable to be risked, so they will only agree to fly when it is completely safe to do so. However, most flights are known to take off on time in every season and you should stay ready for anything that may come your way.
